New Season, New Look for the Newsletter

Greetings Everyone!

It's been a while since my last newsletter, I did say they would be occasional, and you may have noticed the new look. In the past I've used a newsletter service to compose these newsletters but I've decided I'd rather do it myself and have total control over the look and feel of each issue.Autumn on the Merced River, Yosemite NP

Another change is I'm combining both my Fine Art newsletter and my Portrait/Wedding newsletters together. So for those of you that are both collectors of mine and portrait or wedding clients you'll only be receiving one newsletter in your inbox this time.

Other than that I've been hard at work on many projects, from fine art to portraits to being the editor of the Whitespider Photography Magazine, I fill my days with photography.

The weather is cooling down and the colors of fall are starting to appear in different locations on the map. This is one of my favorite times of year and I'll be making the most of it, I'll soon be departing on a fall colors trip, I can't wait.

Newsletter Special: "Doorway Volterra, Italy"

As you know, in each newsletter I offer a different print at a substantial discount from the normal gallery price.  The fine print program is a great way for you to start your photography collection or add to it.  Each image offered will be one of my limited edition gallery images, which makes the Fine Print Program an even more unique opportunity to own some of my work.  The images are limited to an edition of just 144 images and 5 artist proofs.  Each image is matted to current gallery standards, signed and numbered on both the front of the mat under the image and on the mat's reverse.  Framing is also available if you'd like so the image is ready to hang as soon as you get it.

This month, with thoughts of Italy running through my head, I have Doorway, Volterra, Italy. This Doorway, Volterra, Italyimage was created in September of 2006 while on my honeymooned to Italy. My wife and I spent almost two weeks there and had an absolutely wonderful time. The first part of our trip was spent in Rome, filled with action and art. The balance of our trip was a tad more peaceful as it was spent in Italy's Tuscan region. On this particular morning we rented a Vespa scooter and decided to head out and see what we could find. What we found was the beautiful fortified city of Volterra, set on a hill overlooking a rolling valley. We spent a large part of the day roaming the city, sampling the wonderful food and cramming as many handmade plates, jewelry and other mementos as we could onto our little scooter. I took Doorway, Volterra, Italy while strolling through the cities narrow street.

Doorway, Volterra, Italy is printed in a traditional horizontal format and its rich Tuscan colors play into the colors and themes of just about any home or office decor. This has been one of my best selling images and I've been told is an image that brings an overwhelming sense of calm and peace to a home and its family.

The special newsletter price of Doorway, Volterra, Italy is below and reflects a 30% savings from what the prints sell for in one of my galleries. Please note that the image sizes stated below refer to standard print size of the image itself and after trimming the print my be slightly smaller depending on the actual aspect ratio of the image. Also, after matting the overall dimensions will be larger. You can view the matted dimensions by visiting the ordering info section of my website, or just click here.

Doorway, Volterra, Italy is available in sizes from 11x14 to 30x40, to place an order simply click here and enter coupon code "newsletter" once you have selected the size you would like.

Workshops

There is still room available for my two upcoming workshops, "Seeing the Light, A Photographer's Journey" and "Portfolio Development". Both are being taught through The Photographers' Gallery, if you'd like to attend please sign up soon by visiting the links below.

Seeing the Light, A Photographer's Journey:  As a photographer I spend most of my time in the field chasing light, whether it’s directional, soft, harsh or colorful, each image is a journey to find the best Mother Nature has to offer. This course will cover extensively the important of light to photography. Through the use of example images from both well known photographers and myself, students will learn that photography in its most basis form is the recording of light on film or an image sensor.

Each week student’s will be introduced to the importance of light in a different subject, portrait, landscape, photo journalism, fine art and travel etc. via a slideshow on the subject and an instructor led discussion on light and techniques to deal with different lighting conditions students my encounter while creating images on that weeks subject. Students will be expected to create at least 3 images from that week’s subject (landscape, portrait, photo journalism etc) which demonstrates creative and/or good use of light.

Images will be shared with other students in the class during an instructor led critique where we’ll highlight the progression each student is making and constructively offer ways to improve their seeing of the light.

Dates: October 29, November 5th and 12th 6-8:30
Location: The Photographer's Gallery, Modesto, CA
For more info on the class and to register visit the Photographer's Gallery website.

Beauty DividePortfolio Development: Learn how to see your images in a more objective manner, so many times as photographers we get caught up in the story of how the image was created, which will sometime cloud our judgment and escalate the value of a certain image or group of images in our own mind's eye. Weather you shoot for personal growth or in the hopes of becoming a pro, learning how to create a well thought out portfolio that showcases your talent and message in a logical, thought provoking and beautiful way to make an impacting presentation is essential. The class will also touch about ways to present your portfolio(s) in both more traditional print forms and modern digital formats.

Date: Beginning November 19th and lasting 4 weeks
Location: TBA, this class may be conducted online.
For more information on the class and to register visit the Photographer's Gallery website.

Interview with Kim Weston

Kim WestonMost of you may know that I am the editor and co-founder of The Whitespider Photography Magazine. Luckily for me that gives me the opportunity to meet and interview some of the most high regonized and talented photographers in the world. My good fortune continued a couple of months ago when I had the opportunity to sit down with photographer Kim Weston in his studio near Carmel, California.

Kim has been working with the human form for almost 30 years, creating some of the subjects most beautiful and creative work during that time.  His images are technically perfect and emotionally telling, relating what is going on in his life at that time. While sharing the family name of other icons in the photography world such as his grandfather Edward, father Cole and uncle Brett, Kim has done more than just follow in their footstep, he has developed a vision that has allowed him to make his own large footprints in the photography world.

Kim is a wonderfully personable guy, opening not only his studio to us but also his darkroom and the darkroom and home of his grandfather Edward.  During our time with Kim we discuss not only his work but also his family and his vision of photography.

I know not everyone on my mailing list is a photographer themselves but for those of you that are interested in photography or a photography collector this is something you won't want to miss. You can read the interview, watch the video or listen to the podcast here. Oh, and just so you know, Kim does work with the human form and while his images are very tasteful and considered highly acclaimed works of art, many do contain nudity and the transcribed interview is illustrated with his images. Just so you know.
